Northolt Station Finally Goes Step-Free as New Lift Opens
Northolt Underground station has become fully step-free, making journeys easier for disabled passengers, older residents, families with pushchairs and anyone who finds stairs difficult.
The major accessibility improvement has now opened at Northolt station on the Central line, providing passengers with a step-free route all the way from the street to the train.
A new lift and footbridge have been installed as part of the project, making Northolt the 95th London Underground station to offer step-free access.

A Big Improvement for Northolt PassengersFor many Northolt residents, the upgrade will make a significant difference to everyday journeys.
Previously, passengers needed to negotiate stairs to reach the platform. That could make using the station difficult or impossible for wheelchair users and some people with limited mobility.
The new infrastructure includes a footbridge running from the ticket office to the platform together with a lift.
Transport for London says manual boarding ramps are also available, allowing passengers who need them to make the complete journey from street level onto a train.
The improvement will also benefit parents and carers travelling with pushchairs, older passengers, people carrying heavy luggage and anyone for whom stairs present a problem.
Northolt Becomes London's 95th Step-Free Tube StationNortholt's completion represents another milestone in the continuing programme to make London's Underground network more accessible.
More than a third of Tube stations now offer step-free access, while all stations on the Elizabeth line, Docklands Light Railway and London Trams network are step-free.
Northolt sits on the West Ruislip branch of the Central line and provides an important transport connection for residents travelling between the borough and central London.
The accessibility work began in 2025 and was carried out while Northolt station remained open to passengers.
Better Connections With Heathrow and HarrowThe improvement could also make Northolt a more useful interchange for accessible journeys beyond the immediate area.
Northolt station is served by the Superloop SL9, which provides an express bus connection between Heathrow Airport and Harrow.
TfL says the combination of the Superloop service and the station's new step-free facilities should create additional journey options for passengers travelling to and from Heathrow.
This could be particularly useful for passengers travelling with luggage as well as people who require step-free transport.
Part of a Wider Accessibility ProgrammeNortholt is not the end of TfL's programme.
Work is continuing at other Underground stations, while dozens more are undergoing feasibility or design work to investigate how step-free access could be introduced.
For Northolt, however, the improvement is already here.
After years of passengers relying on stairs to reach the Central line platform, the new lift means significantly more residents can now use their local Underground station independently.
For a community served by one of west London's busiest transport corridors, it is a practical improvement that should make everyday journeys easier for thousands of people.
