A retired London double-decker bus has found an unusual new home at St Ann's School in Hanwell, where it will be transformed into a sensory learning environment for pupils with complex learning needs.

The bus, donated by transport operator Arriva London, will provide an imaginative new space for pupils aged 11 to 19 to develop confidence, independence and practical life skills.

A Special Delivery to Hanwell

Getting a double-decker bus into a school playground was no ordinary delivery.

After St Ann's School approached Arriva London about donating a retired vehicle, a team of specialists worked together to make the ambitious project possible.

Before delivery, Gray's Engineers removed the engine, gearbox and remaining fluids. Michelin supplied replacement wheels and tyres, while Dynes Recovery helped transport the vehicle.

Around 15 people were involved in manoeuvring the bus into position, with the final stage requiring it to be pushed by hand up a slope.

The operation took approximately three hours.

The result is a familiar London landmark beginning an entirely different journey — one that will take place without leaving the school grounds.

Learning Through Exploration

St Ann's School specialises in supporting young people with severe and complex learning difficulties.

The donated bus will be adapted to provide opportunities for sensory exploration and practical learning in a familiar but exciting environment.

Pupils will be able to experience sitting in the driver's seat, turning the steering wheel and exploring switches and controls.

These activities can help develop communication, coordination, confidence and an understanding of everyday experiences.

Headteacher Timmy Holdsworth welcomed the donation and the enthusiasm it has generated throughout the school community.

The project supports the school's wider commitment to helping young people develop independence and prepare for adult life.

Building on Creative Learning

The bus project follows other imaginative developments at St Ann's.

In March 2025, the school celebrated the opening of its London Under the Sea sensory playground, created with support from Merlin's Magic Wand and Merlin Entertainments.

That project introduced interactive features including sensory seating, musical elements and a Tower Bridge-inspired climbing structure.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate how creative environments can make learning more accessible and engaging.

The double-decker also highlights the difference that partnerships between local schools and businesses can make.

What once transported passengers across London is now set to help young people explore new possibilities.
