Ealing has a wonderful reason to celebrate, with local poet, writer and filmmaker Dean Atta bringing home one of the most coveted prizes in British screen culture. Dean took home the BAFTA for British Short Animation for his film *Two Black Boys in Paradise* — and the community couldn't be prouder.

The film follows two boys, Doula and Eden, in their own private paradise, a world that is shattered by suspicion and fear. Dean grew up across north west London, attended Twyford High School in Acton, and still calls the borough home. Fittingly, it was at Act One Cinema in Acton — a favourite haunt of his — where he sat down to share his story.

The film's roots stretch back years. Dean describes it as having had "a long journey from poem to screen," beginning with a poem he wrote six or seven years ago, inspired by a painting of Adam and Eve. Released in 2025 to strong reviews, BAFTA recognition followed this year.

For Dean, the award is "a green light to keep doing this," and he hopes it will open doors for other black queer stories to reach audiences everywhere.

It is a joy to see Acton's creative spirit shining so brightly on the national stage, and one hopes Dean's success will inspire the next generation of storytellers growing up right here in the borough.
