West Middlesex Golf Club and Community Impact in Ealing

Exploring developments involving Ealing golf courses and the West London Regional Park

Ealing Council has announced plans to reclaim the lease ofWest Middlesex Golf Club, currently holding 76 years, and reissue a shorter-term lease.

This move aims to integrate the 18-hole course into the proposed West London Regional Park in the future.

The decision follows the 2024 closure of Perivale Golf Club, which was transformed into Pear Tree Park.

The council has previously stated its intention to establish ten new parks, expressing concerns about an overabundance of golf courses in the borough.

The matter is scheduled for discussion at the council's cabinet meeting on 8 July.

Situated on Greenford Road, West Middlesex Golf Club connects Brent Lodge Park to Southall, an area with limited green space.

The club's facilities include two houses, a clubhouse, a banqueting venue, and a sizable car park.

These amenities could be incorporated into the future regional park, either maintaining the golf course or converting it into parkland.

Planners have envisioned new public access routes across the course to enhance connectivity.

The existing car park presents a potential site for developing housing with views over the course and parklands.

While Perivale Golf Club's 123 members were accommodated by Brent Valley Golf Club, West Middlesex's 450 members pose a greater challenge for relocation.

The club has not commented on the council's plans.

An Ealing Council spokesperson stated, "The cabinet is due to consider a report about the lease for West Middlesex Golf Course in July. No decisions have been made, and more details will be available in the report published ahead of the meeting."

In its report on Perivale Golf Club's closure, the council noted that the borough requires only three to four courses to meet demand, indicating a surplus.

The report also highlighted the environmental impact of golf courses, citing extensive use of fertilizers and frequent grass cutting.

Allowing the area to revert to nature is anticipated to yield biodiversity gains, aligning with council policy.

West Middlesex Golf Club, established in 1891 and redesigned in 1910 by five-time Open Champion James Braid, is renowned as one of West London's finest golfing venues.

The course features classic Braid elements, abundant woodlands, free-draining soil, and superb greens year-round.
