A University of West London healthcare project has reached the shortlist for one of the UK's major healthcare awards.

The university and London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust have been named finalists in the Staff Wellbeing and Culture Award category at the HSJ Awards 2026.

Their project has an appropriately human title:

“Caring for Those Who Care: Restorative Clinical Supervision in Critical Care Postgraduate Education.”

The initiative focuses attention on an important part of healthcare that patients may rarely see — the wellbeing of the doctors, nurses and other professionals working in high-pressure clinical environments.

Supporting those working in critical care

Critical-care professionals routinely work with seriously ill patients and their families, often in highly demanding circumstances.

The shortlisted collaboration brings restorative clinical supervision into postgraduate critical-care education, connecting professional development with support for staff wellbeing.

That approach has now placed the UWL partnership alongside seven other finalists from across the country in the Staff Wellbeing and Culture category.

For Ealing, the nomination also provides another example of work originating from the borough gaining recognition beyond West London.

The University of West London has its main campus on St Mary's Road in Ealing and has longstanding links with healthcare education and professional training.

West London healthcare recognised nationally

The UWL partnership isn't the only local healthcare work recognised in this year's awards.

West London NHS Trust, which provides mental health, community and social-care services across Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow, has itself received three HSJ Award nominations, including the prestigious Trust of the Year category.

The Trust's Ealing CAMHS Link Worker project has been shortlisted for the Early Intervention and Prevention for Children, Young People and Families Award.

The programme works with schools, faith groups, voluntary organisations and community leaders to improve access to children's mental-health support among underrepresented communities.

According to West London NHS Trust, referrals from targeted communities have increased by an average of around 30%, with approximately 200 additional children each month accessing timely support.

The Trust is also part of the Pan London Major Trauma Psychology Network shortlisted for Mental Health Innovation of the Year.

Together, the nominations put several different strands of West London's healthcare work onto the national stage — from supporting NHS staff to improving children's access to mental-health services.

For the University of West London, reaching the HSJ shortlist also demonstrates how education and healthcare can work together to address something increasingly recognised as fundamental to good patient care: supporting the wellbeing of the people delivering it.
